Does anyone have experience using the helm feature in garmin active captain and ipads to create a primary display system with the garmin unit elsewhere in the boat?  Is there a lag between the garmin unit and the ipad? Are there any features you cannot use in the active captain helm display on the ipad that would require access to the physical garmin display?

Thanks,

Hi Avi, I think I've used every MFD remote app like the Garmin Helm that's now part of the ActiveCaptain app. It varies with the system and maybe also the specific WiFi environment on the boat, but there always seems to be a bit of lag. Also the screens often don't look quite as sharp, probably because of necessary changes in resolution.

At least at first, Simrad blocked autopilot control on their remote app, and while that may have changed, I understood their caution. I am not comfortable using an autopilot without at least a wired Standby button within reach.

I've used most of them as well, and Ben's comments are exactly what I'd say. Somewhat slower, definitely lower resolution, and concerns in general about controlling anything via a WiFi network with an iPad.

I was just out this last weekend in some bad weather, and tried to use an iPad app to control my autopilot from an alternate location due to weather, and immediately aborted due to the lag and comfort level in heavy seas. I would much rather have preferred a real autopilot head.
