Hi everyone,

I'm trying to add an Raymarine i70s display to my system and am having trouble with it.

I have four NMEA 2000 components:

-SiTek AIS

-Garmin 7610 ChartPlotter

-Airmar Depth Sensor

-Raymarine i70s

The chartplotter (Garmin) can see all the devices: AIS, depth sensor, i70s

However, the i70s can only see the AIS and depth sensor. It can't see the Garmin at all.

The Garmin chartplotter is supposed to be outputting standard NMEA PGNs so in theory the i70s should be able to get GPS and heading data from the chartplotter, but I can't figure out how to make that happen.

Any ideas on why the Raymarine device can't see the Garmin device?

Both the chart plotter and i70s display unit are at the latest firmware versions.

Thank in advance

Good morning Emery,

I'm thinking (but don't have enough information yet to know for sure) that your i70s is actually seeing the data from the MFD but the MFD isn't outputting location information.

So, I have a few questions.  First, how is your MFD getting its location data?  Is there an NMEA-2000 GPS receiver on the network?  Also, can you verify the NMEA-2000 network is properly constructed?  That is, a terminator on each end of the network and only a total of two terminators, all drops to devices are coming out of a tee connector, power is inserted to the network via a dedicated power drop.

Lastly, can your MFD see the i70s?  It should show up in the network device list.

The Garmin MFD is getting location from its internal GPS. I don't have any other kind of GPS on the network.

The NMEA 2000 network has terminators on both ends of the backbone and has been working well. All devices are exchanging data except for the i70s and the Garmin MFD.

The MFD does show the i70s in its list of devices.

My exact problem is this:

I'm trying to get the AIS display working on the i70s. The i70s is getting AIS data from the SiTek unit, but alarms every few minutes saying no Heading/COG. I thought it would be able to get that info from the Garmin MFD.

Hi Emery, This may not be the problem, but do you have a Heading sensor in the system? Garmin often calls COG "GPS Heading" but that's confusing. Heading is where your bow is pointed. COG to where your boat is actually going.

I'll bet that's the problem. I'm relying on the chartplotter for heading information instead of having a real heading indicator.

I'd assumed that since the chartplotter can display AIS info with GPS heading that the i70s could do the same.

Well, I found this in the i70s manual: "View AIS targets — (Only shown if there is Heading or stable COG data available.)"

Your Garmin should or could be delivering "stable COG" but maybe you're trying this at a dock, and so the COG is quite unstable (even if Garmin is masking that on their display)?

I think you have to get underway before you'll know for sure that the i70s AIS display really isn't working.

You're right. As soon as we got underway the AIS display alarm went away and it started to work.

I've been meaning to upgrade my autopilot to one with NMEA 2000. I assume that will put heading on the network and make the i70s display can get it from there.

Thanks for the replies.
