Panbo editor, publisher & chief bottlewasher from 4/2005 until 8/2018, and now pleased to have Ben Stein as a very able publisher, webmaster, and editing colleague. Please don't regard him as an "expert"; he's getting quite old and thinks that "fadiddling fumble-putz" is a more accurate description.

  1. GPSNavX says:

As a developer of affordable marine charting and navigation software for Macs I believe there is a place for both dedicated marine electronics and general purpose computers like Macs.
For example my current boat is far too wet to bring a Mac out into the cockpit. Instead I use the Mac to capture both my GPS data and instrument data for later review.
In the cockpit I have an older black and white Garmin GPSMap 175 (Annoyed at Garmin for dropping chart support) and ComNav instruments. Easy to see and read as I sail.
I can also use the Mac at home (Big 23″ display) to develop routes and upload them to the Garmin.
So there is not a one-size-fits-all solution out there for everyone. The great thing is all the choices available and now one is not tied to MS Windows to run good Nav software 😉
