As I consider which cockpit chartplotter (hence radar) to use with either Coastal Explorer or MaxSea TZ (at chart table) going forward, I worry about megalomaniacal manufacturers thwarting customers attempts to maintain robust, redundant systems. Please note my post "Surviving failures in a small NavNet" on http://www.furunousa.com/Support/Forum.aspx under NavNet 3D, wherein I bemoan the fact that radar overlay to MaxSea TZ can't survive a chartplotter failure.

I'd appreciate help in causing Furuno to appreciate that this is critically important since denial of such functionality genuinely jeopardizes their customers safety. Choosing to render the radar useless if no MFD is functionally present is consistent with the industries long standing fear of fear of losing chartplotter revenues once open standards define radar interfaces. It's hard to understand why Furuno would impose such a penalty on PCs running their own MaxSea TZ software, however. This is not technically difficult nor expensive but it may be indicative of whether Furuno is so intent on maximizing ROI that they are willing to undermine the philosophical purpose of NavNet i.e. safe/effective navigation. Could it be?

I have a boat in the med and i just can't get my arms around spending $140 for the rental of an Aegian Chart when I can use my i pad and Navionics charts that cover all of Europe for $40 bucks...The nobeltec model is just not sustainable.
You seem to have the inside on some changes within their system. I love the software but I just hate the c-map arrangement.

First, please forgive me for any lame assertions or comments regarding this quest since I'm green at NMEA. The only thing going for me is that I have been reading, reading and then reading some more.

My question is this: I assume that when a micro/mid powertap tee is installed (e.g. Maretron's CF-SPWR05-CF) then one side of the network can be isolated from the other side (power wise). This sounds great because one can split the network in two: the at-anchor segment running the essentials (e.g. high bilge sensor) and the underway segment running the remaining components (e.g. engine temperature). This would be very useful since after measuring my desired NMEA network with N2K builder I discovered that it could easily consume over 100 watts - wow that's 9 Ah.

The problem I see is that practically speaking this entails substantially more cable and routing headaches in order to separate the at-anchor from the underway devices, which in turn adds move cabling and thus Ah. This is where, I assume, that network bridges come into play (e.g. BEP Marine's CZONE).

If all of the above is correct then why are these network bridges late arrivals and hard to find. One would think they would be a standard and off-the-shelf device part of say Maretron's offering.

Again, please forgive the newbie and many thanks to all that have responded to past questions.

The unit will be used in SE Louisiana "inside waters" for fishing purposes. Of particular interest are the satellite overlays that should be particularly useful to me in areas of the Mississippi Delta where coastal erosion has made CG nav charts less than useful.

I have two concerns:

1. I have been told that the Platinum satellite overlays cause the Lowarnce system to slow to the point of being problematic for realtime navigation purposes. One dealer told me the system computer processors do not have sufficient speed to handle the Platinum optional products.

2. Has anyone been able to use the Platinum satellite overlays in the Mississippi Delta and have they been useful for navigating through areas where coastal erosion has been particularly problematic?

3. If the Lowrance precessing speeds are an issue, does anyone have experience using the Hummingbird 1198c si Combo with similar mapping software?

Thanks guys and gals.

Finally, something new. There's a neat, new app released today called Currents. It uses the NOAA CO-OPS current data to give really nice current flow overlays on Google maps - about the perfect thing for coastal cruising.

This is the first Android app that does something no iPhone app does (to my knowledge). It's about time...

Don't get me wrong - I own 2 iPhones and an iPad and love them. But having competition and another marketplace for apps will spark creativity and competition and will make it all better for everyone.

There has been so much talk over the Ipad and its limitations and so much talk about how many things that it can do. Should you use it as a primary navigation tool? Many people feel that it is not reliable enough to do so....why? PC navigation has been around for quite some time....what makes the Ipad different? I know the Ipad is new and lots of people want to hook up a transducer to a bluetooth for a fishfinder, some want 3D bathy charts, some want weather overlay. I hear people that want to connect their radar to a black box to show radar with overlay. Imagine the possibilites!! Garmin has great charts...Raymarine has great charts etc etc. Maxsea Zero is fantastic as well. Cant they put that into an app? Having the freedom for quick scroll and zoom is huge! Email, internet connectivity...it goes on and on. I am getting addicted to the Ipad (obviously) and would like to know what is in development as we speak!! I need to know what has worked best for you and what kind of secret tricks that have worked as well. An app that can work with all wireless sensors where the user can custom create his own navigation screen(s). Who will be the first to deliver this technology? I love the imux idea, does anyone have it? I just imagine walking around the boat with an Ipad showing me radar, bottom contour, nautical charts with weather overlay, compass heading, fishfinder, 3D bottom and surroundings. It can be done, but who will do it best and who will do it first?

But what else would it be good for them to know? What else should the survey include? Should it branch into the area of customer satisfaction and brand attributes like JD Power? For example, what good is it to tell the mfg we make our purchase decision based on reliability if they don't know how we perceive their reliability?

Inquiring minds want to know, what topics should be added to the survey?
