Garmin AIS600 TX problem

Vote 0 Votes

New Ranger Tug R-31 with Garmin chartplotter, AIS600, VHF. Auto pilot all inteconnected via NMEA 2000. AIS600 works fine in receiving, but there is an apparent problem with transmitting as evident by not seeing my vessel appear on various AIS tracking apps. Unit's diagnostics does not show any problems. Have been in contact with Garmin, but looking for any and all possible answers.

  • Can you provide a little more info? Is MMSI programmed? What type and where is antenna mounted ? Are other vessels near you appearing on app, do they have mast or stern rail mounted antenna?

  • All static boat info including MMSI have been programmed into the AIS 600. Other boats that appear on app are in my marina. App receives AIS signals from tower that is less than a mile away. The VHF radio RF output is connected to the AIS unit and the AIS and the AIS unit is connected to an 8" VHF antenna. Antenna is mounted above fly bridge. Connections are per AIS600 installation diagram. Radio operation appears to be ok. Have not checked out antenna mounting on the other boats.

  • Is the AIS600 possibly in silent mode (controlled at your MFD)

The dedicated GPS antenna is connected to the AIS600 and functioning?

What do the indicator lights show?

Does it come with software so that you can connect your PC via USB and look deeper ?

  • Maybe a dumb question, Jerry, but have you checked out the status LED's on the AIS600? The one marked TX flashes if the unit is transmitting.
