RM fluxgate compass *and* Simrad RC42 proximity

Vote 0 Votes

I have a Raymarine ST4000 autopilot with attached Fluxgate compass. I'm installing some new electronics including Simrad RC42 compass (for radar overlay). My understanding is the ST4000 can't use the RC42 so I have to keep the fluxgate compass too. Can I mount the RC42 compass next to the RM fluxgate compass or will they interfere with each other? Seems like they should just detect magnetic flux and not create any, but I don't know for sure. thanks for replies.

  • The compass safe distance for RC42 is 50cm. This means RC42 will not impact a compass placed 50cm away. You Raymarine fluxgate which is an older design may have larger compass safe distance. I would recommend to try to get 70-80cm between the two compasses.

I've previously had a AP12 fluxgate and a Maretron SCC200 about 80cm apart without any problems. I currently have RC42 and SSC200 in the same positions.

  • Thanks much for your reply Abbor! That's what I needed to know. Gary
